Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The materials in this series have been gathered by Stephen Israel during his research of the Ten Hills community. Stephen Israel’s research of Ten Hills focused on the development and use of the land and later the community from the seventeenth century to the early twenty-first century. Most materials in this series provide information about the community and area from the nineteenth to twentieth centuries. These materials include photocopies and print outs of newspaper articles, handwritten notes, Chains of Title for houses in the Ten Hills neighborhood, and correspondence with residents regarding the history of their homes. There are materials specifically related to people most involved in the creation of Ten Hills, such as Charles Steffey, the Chappell family, and the Macht family who started the Welsh Construction Company that built many homes in Ten Hills. This series also contains copies of land deeds for Ten Hills properties, the bulk of which are from the early to mid-twentieth century. A folder containing lists and indexes of Ten Hills land deeds is also available here.

Some folders have materials used by Stephen Israel for presentations, such as binders that had contained photographs, Chains of Title for homes, and correspondence. There is a large portion of articles from the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries; the bulk of these articles are from the twentieth century. The articles are a mix of early twentieth century advertisements for Ten Hills and articles describing the development of the Ten Hills area. Later articles from the 1990s and 2000s include some obituaries and real estate listings. The bulk of obituaries and real estate materials in this series are found in respective folders; the obituaries are from the second half of the twentieth century, and real estate materials not only include listings, but some articles and information about Ten Hills homes such as the builder and year the house was built. Obituaries of architects in this series are available with other materials relating to architects involved with Ten Hills. Original news articles are kept in an oversized folder; there is a mix of real estate and other articles available there.

Some materials in this series were used by Stephen Israel for presentations and displays. Among these materials include materials from the Preservation and Revitalization Conference in Easton, Maryland, where Mr. Israel was a speaker, and displays for community events such as the Ten Hills block parties. Display materials are mostly oversized maps and photocopies of news articles, which are kept in oversized boxes. Other display materials are notes for Israel’s presentations, charts, and a quiz about Ten Hills through four centuries. Some photographs are available in this series; photocopied versions of Ten Hills homes from the University of Maryland at College Park and original photographs that was received in one of the three binders kept by Stephen Israel. The original photographs are of streets, homes, the Edmondson Trolley Gardens, and a parade. This series also includes 3 USB flash drives of Word and Excel documents created by Stephen Israel during his research, as well as PDF scans of paper records. Some of these documents are the originals of printed documents in this series, such as chains of title for Ten Hills homes.
