Scope and Contents

The Kurt L. Schmoke Photographs collection contains photographs taken by Robert Breck Chapman showing Kurt L. Schmoke during his time as Mayor of Baltimore City. The photographs document Schmoke's public engagements and outreach to Baltimore's neighborhoods and communities in the 1990s during the middle of his 12-year term as Mayor of the City of Baltimore. Portions of the collection have been digitized and can be viewed in the digital exhibit.

Biographical Note

Robert Breck Chapman was a staff photographer employed by the City of Baltimore between 1971 and 2002. In addition to working for the Model Cities Agency, the Urban Services Agency, and the Department of Housing, Chapman was also the unofficial photographer for Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke.

Historical Note

Kurt L. Schmoke (b. 1949 -) served as the 46th Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland from 1987-1999. He was the first African American to be elected mayor of Baltimore City. As mayor, Schmoke was responsible for numerous urban projects and promoted adult literacy. After leaving office, Schmoke practiced law and in 2003 was appointed dean of Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C. He became the president of the University of Baltimore in 2014.

Custodial History

The collection was deposited at the University of Baltimore by Robert Breck Chapman circa 2000 and donated May 21, 2013.

Processing Information

Collection processed by Aiden Faust in 2014. Approximately 46,000 black and white 16 mm photographic film negatives were digitized by Jeffrey Borneman, 2014-2015. Photographs were selected for a digital exhibit by Aiden Faust in 2015.
