Collection includes 21 pieces of memorabilia consisting of framed photographs, drawings, awards, hats, and clothing from Kurt Schmoke's time as the Mayor of Baltimore in the 1980s and 1990s. The collection highlights several specific accomplishments and projects of Mayor Schmoke. Materials are mainly non-textual. Collection includes oversize materials and textiles in addition to physical awards and plaques.

Biographical Note

Kurt L. Schmoke (b. 1949 -) served as the 46th Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland from 1987-1999. He was the first African American to be elected mayor of Baltimore City. Schmoke is currently the president of the University of Baltimore. As mayor, Schmoke was responsible for numerous urban projects and promoted adult literacy. After leaving office, Schmoke practiced law and in 2003 was appointed dean of Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C. He became the president of the University of Baltimore in 2014.
