Historical Note

Founded in Baltimore in 1956, the Art Seminar Group functions as a volunteer-driven social and cultural organization devoted to adult education in the visual arts at the local level. The group invites curators and art historians to present on scholarly topics in visual art to their members, fostering education and discussion around modern and contemporary art. The Walters Art Museum recruits for its museum docent program from the Art Seminar Group, and the group maintains strong ties to other local arts institutions, including: the Maryland Institute College of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Johns Hopkins University, the Contemporary, and the University of Maryland. It is a prime example of how grassroots arts education organizations have operated in Baltimore since the mid-1950s.
