Scope and Contents
This collection documents the activity of West Baltimore civic leader, Mary Rosemond, primarily through the records of organizations and community groups that she was active in from the 1980s through the mid-2000s. Among these organizations are the Rosemont Neighborhood Improvement Association, Inc. (RNIA), Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore, Inc. (NHS), and the Alliance of Rosemont Community Organizations (ARCO). Topics addressed within the collection include community education, planning, crime and safety, sanitation, beautification, and zoning. The majority of the collection is textual.

Biographical Note
Mary Elizabeth Rosemond was born in Jacksonville, Florida on February 21, 1927. She attended Boylan Haven Girls' School and graduated from Hampton University, a private, historically Black university in Tidewater Virginia. Rosemond moved to Baltimore in the 1950s and taught in the City's public schools at Lexington Terrace Elementary School. She is best known for her community activism in West Baltimore, where she fought eminent domain and the construction of Baltimore's "Highway to Nowhere" through her neighborhood, Rosemont. Ms. Rosemond died January 18, 2011 in Timberlake, North Carolina.
