Historical Note

The Board of Trade of Baltimore City was established in 1836. According to the document titled, "An Act to Incorporate the Board of Trade of the City of Baltimore" located in this collection, the function of the Board of Trade was to consider the issues affecting the city's commercial, industrial, and legislative interests and to promote the city's commerce and manufacturing industries. The membership of the Board was made up of representatives of "Trade Bodies" with business interests in Baltimore City. The Board officers met monthly to discuss and advocate for their interests.

The Board of Trade merged with the Merchants & Manufacturers Association in 1924 to form the Baltimore Association of Commerce (the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Baltimore after 1964).

Information about the functions of the Board of Trade were found in this collection: "An Act to Incorporate the Board of Trade of the City of Baltimore," Board of Trade of Baltimore City Records, box 1, folder 1: Incorporation and Rules. University of Baltimore Special Collections and Archives.
