Scope and Contents

This collection documents the activities of the Commission on Government Efficiency and Economy in Baltimore, Maryland between 1929 and 1974. Materials are mainly textual and include organizational records and articles of incorporation, meeting minutes of the board of trustees and the executive committee, correspondence, adminstrative files, financial records, research reports, newspaper clippings covering Baltimore local issues and related national topics, and publications.

Historical Note

The Commission on Government Efficiency and Economy (CGEE) was founded in 1929. Its predecessor was a volunteer commission on efficiency and economy which functioned from 1923 to 1927. This volunteer commission was concerned with public administration policy and practice, cost, management and operation of Maryland Government. The CGEE's mission after 1929 was to conduct impartial research on local and state government in order to affect higher standards of performance in conducting government affairs. It also sought to stimulate citizen participation by informing citizens about local government affairs.

Custodial History

The records of the Commission on Government Efficiency and Economy were deposited at the University's Baltimore Regional Institutional Studies Center in 3 accessions between 1970 and 1974. The collection was donated to the University of Baltimore by Alan L. Anders on September 30, 1974.
