Scope and Contents

The Midtown Academy Records contains records from Sarah Fawcett-Lee, a former president of the nonprofit Midtown Academy, Inc., and founding members of the organization, Wendy Samet and Elizabeth Nix. The records relate to Midtown Academy, a public K-8 charter school in Baltimore, Maryland, and the governing nonprofit's work and functions. The collection documents administrative work, board meetings, fundraising, an oral history project, volunteer work, and governance related work. Materials are mainly textual and include correspondence, memoranda, handbooks, directories and minutes.

Historical Note

The Midtown Academy (PS #321) is a public charter school located at 1398 West Mount Royal Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland. It serves students in kindergarten through grade eight and is governed by a nonprofit organization, The Midtown Academy, Inc. The Academy was founded in 1997 by a coalition of parents and teachers in Reservoir Hill and Bolton Hill and became part of Baltimore City Public Schools' "New Schools Initiative." Under state legislation passed in 2003, The Midtown Academy converted to a charter school in 2005.

The collection is organized in three series:

  • Sarah Fawcett-Lee Records, 2003-2004
  • Wendy Samet Records, 1996-2006
  • Elizabeth Nix Records, 1999-2003

Custodial History

Series 1 was donated to the University of Baltimore by Sarah Fawcett-Lee, former President of Midtown Academy, Inc., in 2004. Series 2 was accessioned on August 5, 2016 from Wendy Samet. Series 3 was accessioned on March 9, 2023 from Elizabeth Nix.

Separated Materials

Personnel files containing sensitive personally identifiable information (PII) for students and staff was removed from the collection. One folder of unrelated personal papers was separated from Series 2 and returned to the donor on July 6, 2023.

Processing Information

Series 1 was processed by archives staff prior to 2008. Series 2 and 3 were processed by Thomas Dettling in June 2023.
