Biographical / Historical

There were 114 students in the first business class. In 1971, the Business program established the Master in Business Administration program followed by the Master of Science and certificate programs. In 1973, the University merged with the Baltimore College of Commerce. In 1975, the University became a public institution, serving an upper-division student body. In 1982, the Business School received three generous financial gifts from the Merrick Foundation and was named after Robert G. Merrick, Sr. The business programs were accredited by AACSB International in 1982. In 1994, the Merrick School of Business moved into its new building, the William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center, located at 11 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The Business program established the nation's first online AACSB accredited M.B.A. program in 1998. In 2006, the University of Baltimore and Towson University formed a strategic partnership to deliver the UB/Towson Master in Business Administration and the school established the first and only undergraduate business program in Maryland focused on the real estate and economic development industry. In 2008, Darlene Brannigan Smith, B.S. 1978, M.B.A. 1980, became the first alumna appointed as Dean of the School of Business and The University of Baltimore was the first University System of Maryland institution to sign the United Nations Global Compact on the Principles for Responsible Management Education. The M.S. in Taxation Program Ranked in Nation's Top 30 Percent according to TaxTalent.com in 2011. U.S. News and World Report ranked the Merrick School of Business among best undergraduate business programs in their 2011 rankings and ranked the UB/Towson M.B.A. among best part-time M.B.A. programs in their 2012 rankings. In July 2009, the Accounting and Management Information Systems Department was renamed Accounting Department. The Economics, Finance, and Management Science Department was renamed the Finance and Economics Department in July 2009. The Management and Marketing was renamed Management and International Business Department in July 2009.
