Scope and Contents

This collection includes both organizational records and genealogy research. The organizational records are primarily correspondence between council members from the mid-1950's to the early 1980's. The genealogy research on the MacGregor and Magruder family lines represents the work of several members of the society, including Thomas Garland Magruder, Charles Kurz, and Regina Hill. This archival collection compliments the society's Marshall Magruder Memorial Library, also housed at the University of Baltimore.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research, with one exception. Records in the "Restricted Membership Files" sub-series are only open to society members with permission from the society Chieftain.

Historical Note

The American Clan Gregor Society was organized in 1909 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Although related to the Clan Gregor Society of Scotland, the American group formed as a separate society in order to admit women and members whose surnames were derivatives—known as Septs—of the name MacGregor. The society's objectives, as stated in 1910, were “to gather in clanship, to inspirit cordiality among its members, to foster home ties, and to collect genealogical and historical records for the compilation of a complete and authentic history of it and its members.” In addition to genealogical research, other society activities include the publication of annual Year Books, Annual Gatherings, and sponsorship of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in North Carolina.

Two linear feet of ACGS scrapbooks were received from Robert F. MacGregor, Jr. on July 5, 2016. Sixteen linear feet of membership files were transferred in three shipments from ACGS Cheiftain, Lois Ann Garlitz, to Special Collections in April 2017.
