Abstract

Chester L. Wickwire (b. 1913 – d. 2008) was a social and political activist who advocated for civil rights and social welfare and fought against segregation in twentieth-century Baltimore, Maryland, and who was a Chaplain emeritus of Johns Hopkins University. This collection documents his work with Levering Hall YMCA at Johns Hopkins University, his position as Chaplain, and his social advocacy work.

Abstract

The Emmart Memorial Award was established in 1974 by the A.D. Emmart Memorial Fund, Inc. to honor Baltimore journalist A.D. Emmart and to recognize published journalism and writing related to the humanities. This collection contains materials related to the history of the A.D. Emmart Award and the administration of the Award contest between 1974 and 1993.

Scope and Contents

The Mary Risteau Papers document aspects of Risteau's life and memory through the collection of clippings, correspondence, memorabilia, and other materials dating between 1846 and 1990. This collection includes correspondence, magazine and newspaper clippings, travel souvenirs, articles by Risteau, a poster, yearbook, photographs, and books. Formats are primarily textual, but also include still image materials.

Scope and Contents

The Urban Renewal Files collection contains 2 boxes that include correspondence, speeches, articles, newspaper clippings, community flyers and pamphlets, community organizing materials, and legislation related to the issue of urban renewal at the municipal, state, and national levels between 1960 and 1970. Urban renewal efforts and neighborhood preservation initiatives were prominant community concerns in Baltimore City throughout this time period.

Scope and Contents The William Hughes Papers include materials related William Hughes’ work as a newspaper contributor, radio commentator, and Irish-American activist. In addition to textual materials, the collection includes 19 audio and 6 video tapes. Textual materials include writings such as articles, commentaries, columns, essays, in addition to letters to the editor, correspondence, and political items.
