Content Description

The collection contains photographic transparencies (negative and positive film), a corresponding set of scanned DNG files, and photogravure copper plates and prints. The images document Baltimore City's architectural history through the built environment from 1979 to 2020 as well as Schamp's personal fine art photography from 1988 to 2004.

Biographical / Historical

J. Brough Schamp is a professional photographer specializing in architectural, environmental, and aerial photography. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography from the University of Michigan and started his own business in 1980. Brough maintains a longstanding interest in regional architectural heritage. He has documented historic structures for the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT). He served six years on the board of directors of the Federal Hill and Fells Point Preservation Society and received the President’s Award for Craftsman of the Year from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Baltimore chapter in 2008. He is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers, the Baltimore Architectural Foundation, Baltimore Heritage, Preservation Maryland, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The collection is organized into four series:

Custodial History

The collection was donated to the University of Baltimore Foundation by J. Brough Schamp in February 2022. Both accruals were transferred to the University of Baltimore by Schamp and received by Aiden Faust--the first in March 2022 and the second in July 2023.

Separated Materials

One bound volume (The Grape Cure by Johanna Brandt) was separated from the archival collection and cataloged in the Pullen non-circulating library.

Processing Information

The collection was processed by Thomas Dettling in June 2023. The second accrual was processed into the collection by Dettling in July 2023.
