Scope and Content Note

This collection includes recorded interviews which were used to create 'Citizen Schaefer,' Maryland Public Television's 2009 documentary focused on William Donald Schaefer's career in Maryland politics. The collection materials are audiovisual and digital, and include video interviews on 25 individual DVD-R discs and interview transcripts on 1 CD-R disc. Also present is archival footage from the WMAR-TV Collection held at Special Collections and Archives. The collection includes interviews with Ben Cardin, Barbara Mikulski, Parris Glendening, Larry Gibson, Baltimore newspaper reporters, and other politicians and prominent figures in Baltimore.

Historical Note

The interviews in this collection were used to create 'Citizen Schaefer,' Maryland Public Television's 2009 documentary on William Donald Schaefer's career in Maryland politics.

William Donald Schaefer (b. 1921- d. 2011) was a politician (Democrat) who served as Mayor of Baltimore (1971-1986), Governor of Maryland (1987-1995), and Comptroller of Maryland (1999-2007). Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Schaefer attended school in Baltimore and graduated from University of Baltimore School of Law in 1942. He served in U.S. Army during World War II. According to MPT, the 'Citizen Shaefer' documentary portrayed Shaefer's political career through interviews with local newspaper reporters, former aides, and political allies and rivals. The documentary also features archival television and news reports used to portray Shaefer's career in Maryland politics.
